Althorpe Road School

Location: 1701 Althorpe Road, South Sherbrooke

Legal Description: Lot 16 Concession 1, South Sherbrooke

Althorpe Road School played a significant role in the community for education and as a social and recreation centre.

The early one-room ‘Tysicks School’ at 1701 Althorpe Road in South Sherbrooke is recognized as a legacy property under Tay Valley’s Heritage Property Program. The original South Sherbrooke School #6, built in 1916, has been beautifully renovated into a private residence by Randy and Tammy Crawford.

Tysicks School served the Althorpe Hamlet community for 38 years, from 1916 to 1954, when it closed. In renovating the school building, the Crawfords have retained the roof lines and general appearance of the classic rural schools of our area, providing an ongoing reminder of the important role played in the early community, not only for the children’s education, but as centres for the township’s social life.

In 1922, Tysicks School had seven children, from the Tysick, Dowdall and Fournier families. The first teacher was Mae Miller, followed in 1921, by Mrs. Horrocks. In 1921, the Tysick school hosted a re-election meeting for Hon. J. A. Stewart, local MP Haggart.
